LATEST NEWS about the 2015 Festival
Mthwalume High School Male Choir from KwaZulu Natal (pictured right) has registered to participate in 2015. It will be exciting for them and us as it will be the first time a school choir from South Africa will have participated. We are also delighted to announce that The Gentlemen Singers (Czech Republic and pictured below) will be participating. This professional octet has wanted to be with us previously but has only managed to fit us into their busy schedule for the first time next year. Choral Santa Lucia (from Spain), will also be participating. Pictured below right, this young choir is making a substantial name for itself both at home and abroad. Also "first timers" in 2015, we extend a very warm Cornish welcome to Mannerstimmen Basel from Switzerland and Tallinn University Male Choir (Estonia). Sadly Debut Boys Choir has had to withdraw from the Festival as has Tungrsam Kodaly (Hungary), Wicklow (Ireland) and Tideswell (Derbyshire). However, making a very welcome return to the 2015 Festival will be The Sons of Lafayette (USA), Chor Musica (Canada) and The Renner Ensemble (Germany).
The Festival is delighted to announce that opera star tenor, John Treleaven will be singing in the opening concert in Truro Cathedral on Thursday 30th April 2015 and working with choirs on technique in our workshops and seminars. It will be a real joy to be able to welcome him and hear his highly acclaimed voice. He will be accompanied by Alastair Taylor. More UK Choirs Registered
Welcome to Festival first time choirs: Kidderminster, Blaenavon the Sussex Gruffs, Strike Sound, Trelawny and Plymouth Clarion and The Celtic Male Ensemble.
Welcome too, to the youth/boys choirs which have registered. We are really looking forward to hearing you and organsing some fun activities while you are with us for the new YOUTH FESTIVAL and competitions on Sunday 3rd May. In particular, we welcome the Bromley Boy Singers, Peterborough Boys Choir, Truro School Barbershop and, returning to the Festival for a second time, the wonderful Warwickshire County Male Voices. With Mthwalume High School (KwaZulu Natal), Dagilelis (Lithuania) pictured left and St Petersburg, the Youth Festival will have a truly international flavour too.
Männerstimmen Basel from Switzerland (pictured below left courtesy of Brigitte Fässler), wear clothes from the 1950s. Deliberately antiquated, the young men have committed heart and soul to the local male repertoire. The choir has celebrated far and wide with success in Cork in 2011 and at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati in 2012. Celebrating together is almost as important as singing together. The choir sings a wide repertoire of Renaissance, Romantic, folk and contemporary music. Many of the singers sang in children's and youth choirs or studied music. The choir was founded 2008 by former singers of Knabenkantorei Basel. It will be the choir's first visit to the Festival.
Pictured below right in Launceston Methodist Church during the 2013 Festival, the St Petersburg Boys Choir will also be returning in 2015.
The Festival Composers' Competition is now closed. The winning entry, "Crossing the Bar" will be premiered during the Thursday Festival Opening International Gala Concert in Truro Cathedral by Epsom Male Voice Choir, under its director, winning composer Ian Assersohn. The adjudicator of the competition was the internationally renowned composer Dr. Alan Bullard.
Dr. Bullard was also commissioned by the Festival to write a new piece for Cambiata choirs. "Health and Safety" will be premiered during the Sunday night International Gala Youth Concert in the Hall for Cornwall by Warwickshire County Male Voices. Cambiata (Changing Voice) choirs are emerging across the country and it is hugely exciting to see the enthusiasm they bring to singing. Dr. Bullard will also be joining the adjudication panel for the youth choir competitions on Sunday 3rd may in Richard Lander School.
